VR   Touch   Museum

[NAME]:

VR Touch Museum

[PURPOSE]:

      1. A new way to display artifacts

         2. A kind of "Virtual Museum"

         3. Use VR to provide more historical background

         4. More interaction

         5. Use touch to add more immersive feeling

         6. Measure the "presence" and "learning achievement"

[idea]:

The Virtual Reality (VR) Touch museum is a kind of experimental museum that I proposed to challenge the way that traditional museums display items and conduct the learning process. As indicated in the name, two crucial features are included in such museum: One is Virtual Reality techniques, the other is the sense of touch. This means the museum will be based on Virtual Reality as well as a sense of touch corresponding to the virtual world. I hope in this new kind of museum, visitors can not only see the artefacts that conventionally display on independently in modern museum buildings but also enter the space where this artefact was originally positioned/manufactured. For example, in a traditional museum, one only sees an ancient vase displayed inside a glass-box, however in my Virtual Reality Touch Museum, by virtue of the VR head mounted display (HMD), visitors could go back to the room/place where the ancient vase was originally positioned/produced. Besides the VR experience, I also hope visitors could also have realistic touch sensations of the vase’s material and thus obtain a strong sense of “presence” (a feeling of “being there”). Therefore, by combining both virtual and real world, a visitor could be immersed in the actual historical context, strengthening the visitor’s memory of the visit.

What is more, this project also includes an experiment that measures and compares the

“presence” and “learning achievement” of three different conditions: PC monitor, Virtual

Reality, and Virtual Reality + Touch. I designed this experiment to determine if my VR touch

museum performs better in terms of presence and improving learning achievement.

[software + hardware]:

HTC VIVE, Leap Motion, Unity3D, Maya, structure sensor

[function]:

1. Visit a virtual museum via the VR device,

2. Change scenes by different location,

3. Step on different surfaces, each surface represents different scene,

4. Touch real sample material of the object with hands

5. Control some virtual objects. (Move, rotate…)

[EXPERIMENT DESIGN]:

There are two goals for the experiment in my VR Touch Museum, one is to test “Presence”, another is to compare the “learning performance” among the three conditions. Using the “Between Subjects” method, for each condition, there will be eight subjects tested. For my hypothesis, I believe condition3 (“VR + Touch”) would convey a better sense of presence and learning performance, which would mean people would feel more immersed and learn more things using VR with touch.
